According to Andrew (1972) normal occlusion consisted of six characteristics. One of the key features of the nomal occlusion is the presence of accurate contact of the teeth in the arch without any diastema or crowding. Diastema can be defined as the distance or space between the proximal surfaces of adjacent teeth larger than 1 mm. The diastema can be caused by dentoalveolar discrepancies, abnormal Frenum, pathological condition, a systemic disease, the number of tooth abnormalities, teeth deformities, bad habits, hereditary and malposition of teeth. This may give a significant influence on the function and esthetics. Diastema is an aesthetic problem that is common in mixed dentition period and early permanent period. The purpose of this study is to determine the prevalence of diastema in the early adolescence in Banda Aceh at the junior high school in the subdistrict of Kuta Alam.
